Fantastic news! The expansion of the Orca tanks at SeaWorld in California will go ahead — a small improvement, but positive. The best news, however, is that no more captive breeding of Orcas will be allowed there. Hopefully, as a PETA rep said, “these would be the last 11 orcas.” But SeaWorld and other aquariums still captive-breed orcas and other marine life in other states. Until it’s stopped, and live capture is stopped, this cruelty will continue.
But below is a quote from the PR flacks at SeaWorld; it perfectly encapsulates why corporations can not be entrusted with the welfare of humans, animals, or any other part of nature. This company has ended the natural lives of these amazing animals by taking them out of the ocean, where they can swim for thousands of miles, experience real life encountering all kinds of marine species, and socialize within the pod they were born into, and with other pods. Those things are natural, fundamental and important parts of the orca’s life, and SeaWorld has deprived them of all of it. It’s completely inhumane. And yet, here’s what they have to say:
“Breeding is a natural, fundamental and important part of an animal’s life and depriving a social animal of the right to reproduce is inhumane.”
I was going to call this “cognitive dissonance,” but that would imply the presence of actual thinking. Nope, this has to be some kind of Guinness Book record for hypocrisy.
