Congress-buying billionaire Charles Koch attempts the spin of the millennium. This is the voice of the 0.1%. This is the radical right, 2015: Just say the opposite of what’s true, and repeat.
Now, he and his company are so desperate to keep fossil fuels pumping and cash flowing that he’s done an extremely rare TV interview. Trying to put a human face on his rape of the environment and American democracy.
Note that this is on CBS Sunday Morning, not 60 Minutes. I doubt Koch would have agreed to answer the kind of questions 60 Minutes would ask (at least in the days before 60 minutes’ rep started sliding). No mention that Koch Industries has committed felonies. This is a classic softball piece that maintains a veneer of journalism, while it worships the ground Koch walks on.
“I feel the way Frederick Douglass did; he said, ‘I’ll work with anybody to do good, and no one to do harm.'”
Really, Mr. Koch? So why have you allowed your pipelines to spew massive amounts of petroleum, and tried to cover it up? Koch Industries pleaded guilty to five felonies in federal court, including conspiracy to commit fraud. Your company is a felon, but you should be in jail. Your money keeps you out.
Next thing you know, you’ll be comparing yourself to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Anthony Mason (CBS): “But do you think it’s healthy for the system that so much money is coming out of a relatively small group of people?”Charles Koch: “Listen, if I didn’t think it was healthy or fair, I wouldn’t do it. Because what we’re after, is to fight against special interests.”“Some people would look at you and say you’re a special interest.”“Yeah, but my interest is, just as it’s been in business, is what will help people improve their lives, and to get rid of these special interests. That’s the whole thing that drives me.”“There are people out there who think what you’re trying to do is essentially buy power.”“But what I want is a system where there isn’t as much centralized power, where it’s dispersed to the people. And everything I advocate points in that direction.”
